Cleethorpes

With a population of nearly 40,000 in 2011, Cleethorpes is a North East Lincolnshire resort on the Humber estuary. Cleethorpes was made up of villages that were small, or "thorpes" before becoming a unified town: Thrunscoe, Oole, and Itterby, which of a parish called Clee that was wider were part (centred on Old Clee). Cleethorpes resisted attempts to absorb it by Grimsby and, within Humberside in 1974, it became the Cleethorpes Borough.

Under the 'Greater Grimsby' banner, the Council of North East Lincolnshire agreed to market Cleethorpes, Immingham, and Grimsby, in 2009. Lincolnshire coast's resorts that are largest are known by their nicknames (Skegness) 'Skeggy', and (Cleethorpes) 'Meggies', and residents from the area of Humber and Lincolnshire refer affectionately to Cleethorpes as Meggies.

Renamed Cleethorpes was the urban district in 1916, and to include in 1922 and 1927 part of Humberston (as far as North Sea Lane) and Weelsby parish's Beacon Hill area, the boundaries were extended. Cleethorpes Academy and Beacon Academy include schools in Cleethorpes. One of few English League clubs to have their home ground in a different community, Cleethorpes to Blundell Park is home, the football team, Grimsby Town's home ground.

Cleethorpes prior to 1997 had been included in Grimsby, Louth (Lincolnshire), and Brigg and Cleethorpes constituencies. Sidney Sussex, Haverstoe, and Croft Baker include the borough's sixteen wards that Cleethorpes comprises. On the Humber estuary in Lincolnshire's North East, Cleethorpes is a resort with, in 2011, a population of 40,000 nearly.

An old word for clay, and an Old Norse/Old English word for villages, thorpes, and is of modern origin, the name Cleethorpes is thought to come from joining the words clee. With sea-bathing and the taking of medicinal waters becoming fashionable, the 1820s saw the developments of Cleethorpes as a health holiday resort. Replaced in the eighties with a centre, other sports/leisure, The bathing pool of old Cleethorpes was demolished.

Under the LGA of 1894 it became a district, Cleethorpes with Thrunscoe was created as a Local Board of Health District in 1873. Near Machray Place, Christ Church of Cleethorpes is one of the larger parishes. Playing in Midlands 4 East (NE), there is a club for athletics and Rugby Union Football Club of Cleethorpes.
